Environmental Monitoring with the Charles River Buoy

The Boston Museum of Science asked the U.S. EPA to collaborate on a new exhibit spanning three floors, by providing water quality data. The Yawkey Gallery on the Charles River explores the connections between engineering and nature. Humans make engineering decisions that change the river's flow and landscape to meet our needs. When developing these solutions, we need to account for the naturally changing river system and consider the impact on animals and plants that share this environment.

The buoy that sits outside the window has a solar panel that provides electricity and transmits water quality data to EPA's servers and posted publicly. That data is then delivered to the museum. The actual numbers are updated every 15 minutes.
